Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Rare trip into the early 70's... +NFA +KEITH GODCHAUX

hey liam....... very nice playin and i hope you hung out for the very nice NFA too....

keith is really IN on the pitb isn't he?.... certainly, the JAZZY sound you mentioned owed a lot to MR GC... of all the people that ever played in the band KEITH GODCHAUX gets by far the shortest shrift in my estimation.

ostensibly, part of Garcia's problem with keith was that he wasn't "electric enough" and that he copied jerry's lines too much, as opposed to giving him something to bounce off of. (this is similar to what jer supposedly said about BOBBY in 68, re:pig and bobby are out, and the subsequent HEARTBITS - MATRIX shows).

but keith was very contemporary in his use of the FENDER RHODES -- and OK , he wasn't HERBIE HANCOCK, but he had something to offer. i think in these first years, 71-74, (and beyond, include 76-77) MR GC facilitated the group's return to IMPROVISATIONAL GENIUS, and for this, he does not get proper credit.

cheers baby, and welcome to the 70s!/...........;0)
